The red deer stag is the largest land mammal in the UK and an iconic symbol of Exmoor’s wild landscape. Powerful and majestic, stags are especially impressive during the autumn rut, when their echoing roars — known as “bolving” — carry across the moor as they compete for dominance and the right to mate. With their muscular build, branching antlers, and commanding presence, red deer stags embody the untamed spirit of Exmoor, where some of Britain’s finest and wildest herds continue to thrive.
