Mountain hares are one of Scotland’s most iconic upland species, perfectly adapted to life in the harsh conditions of the Highlands. Found mainly in the Cairngorms and upland moorlands, they change their coats with the seasons — brown in summer to blend with the heather, and white in winter to disappear into the snow. These hardy hares face fierce weather, predators, and scarce food, yet remain a symbol of resilience in Scotland’s wildest landscapes.
