The Short-Eared Owl (Asio flammeus) is one of the UK’s most charismatic and easily observed owls, often seen hunting in daylight. With striking yellow eyes, mottled brown plumage, and short “ear tufts” that are rarely visible, these owls are superbly adapted to open landscapes.

In Britain, they are mainly winter visitors, arriving from northern Europe to hunt over rough grasslands, marshes, and coastal fields. Some also breed in the UK, particularly in northern moorlands and Scottish islands. Their buoyant, moth-like flight and habit of hunting low over the ground for voles make them a favourite among birdwatchers.

Although widespread, Short-Eared Owl numbers can fluctuate depending on prey abundance, making each winter encounter a special and memorable sight.
